Dear Friends,

In September 2018, Helene Solomon and Ashley McCown commemorated our firm’s 15th year with a commitment to supporting Boston’s education community. During Solomon McCown & Company’s anniversary celebration, they announced a collaboration between our firm and the Boston Private Industry Council (PIC) to host an annual summer internship for a Boston Public Schools high school student.

As we prepare to welcome our third participant this July, I am delighted to share Solomon McCown & Cence’s new name for the internship: The Helene Solomon & Ashley McCown Scholar Program.

Helene and Ashley started this effort with a goal of supporting Boston high schoolers to learn and excel in public relations, a career path that many professionals in our industry do not explore until later in education. In doing so, they recognized an opportunity to help introduce more young people to PR while fostering skills and work experiences that can support students with whichever career they choose.

Helene and Ashley’s work to develop this program went well beyond creating a new intern position. In its first year, they hosted a job shadow day at our office where they discussed crisis communications with students and answered questions about working in PR. They took an active role in designing a comprehensive curriculum for the summer internship – ensuring that students learn about all aspects of the work we do, and that they could spend time with all of SM&C’s teams, including senior leadership. And, they led our firm to join Boston PIC’s extensive network of employers to learn and share best practices in doing this work.

Helene and Ashley’s leadership instilled a commitment across our firm to support the growth and development of our city’s future communications professionals and business leaders. As SM&C continues to build this program, it’s only fitting that we name it in recognition of their legacy and impact.

Our team looks forward to advancing Helene Solomon and Ashley McCown’s vision long into the future. For Boston-area communicators who are interested in starting similar programs, we encourage you to contact our wonderful partners at Boston PIC to learn more about how to connect with Boston youth on career exploration and summer internship opportunities.

Thank you, and happy summer,

Dan Cence
