As Massachusetts’ small businesses and their patrons adapt to a new normal as the state’s phased reopening plan continues to roll out, our team has been supporting the local restaurants, shops, and businesses that make the Commonwealth so special.

Boston Bottle has come to be my favorite stop for specialty craft beers and wine in the North End. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful when it comes to recommending beverages – one of their friendly associates even recently sparked my interest in stouts. Boston Bottle shares daily images of their newest shipments on their Instagram and is quick to reply to inquiries. Curbside pick-up and delivery are available, and they even provide free delivery for North End residents!

When I’m in search of comfort food, my go-to is chef Marisa Iocco’s scrumptious eggplant parmigiana. It is no exaggeration that I’ve been following her around Greater Boston since she began her local culinary journey here 30 years ago. How lucky for me that her current restaurant, Spiga, on the Needham/Newton line, is near my home. Everything on the menu is delicious and made with love. My favorite dish is the melt-in-your-mouth eggplant. Her current menu features two versions: Eggplant parm en croute and Eggplant ‘meat’balls. Both dishes are served with homemade pasta in tomato basil sauce. The portions are so large that there’s always enough for lunch the next day. Buon appetito!

It has been incredible seeing small businesses around Massachusetts pivot their operations to support the response to the pandemic. I’m especially proud of how my dad and aunt’s family-owned printing company in Quincy, Murphy & Company, is manufacturing personal protective equipment and donating face shields to healthcare providers. In addition to making non-medical disposable face masks, they’ve invited the public to “purchase” donations of face shields that are sent to local hospitals, healthcare workers, nursing homes, and essential businesses.

Nashoba Valley Winery is located in the charming hilltops of Bolton. It is known for its scenic views and, of course, delicious wine. They currently offer delivery and contactless pick-up service for alcoholic beverages and food, and have special discounts on orders of 6 or more bottles of wine. I highly recommend an at-home wine tasting with their “cranberry apple” and “strawberry rhubarb” wine!

As the weather gets warm, the streets of Jamaica Plain start to buzz as people take to exploring the local parks and walking the trails at Jamaica Pond, Franklin Park, and Harvard’s Arnold Arboretum. While it is known for its vibrant green spaces, JP is also home to exciting and unique local businesses, both on and off busy Centre Street. One of my favorites is Dogwood Café, where you can find an excellent brick oven pizza. My personal favorite pie is the Tumbleweed, which tastes especially great when paired with an Orange Line beer from Turtle Swamp Brewery, located just a short walk up the street.
