SM& team to create program to help a select group of Mission-focused organizations successfully communicate in changing times.

May 2009

BOSTON - Solomon McCown & Co. (SM&), a Boston-based public relations firm, is joining forces with The Social Innovation Forum (SIF) to create a strategic, well-rounded communications workshop for a select group of social innovators. This is the second year SM& has paired with SIF, an organization that hosts the initiative for young, inspiring non-profit organizations, providing them a comprehensive 12-month training and support program complete with workshops, coaching and presentation development. SIF’s 12-month course works to hone skills and provide first-rate business strategy to the selected groups. In addition, SM& works alongside SIF to arm these young innovators with the skills necessary to conduct strategic communications and public relations programs as they begin outreach to key stakeholders, including funders. Ultimately, SM& and SIF support six social innovators to grow into successful, recognizable mission-focused organizations working to solve some of the country’s most challenging social issues.

This year’s Social Innovators include: ACCESS, preparing & supporting low-income students to make college graduation a reality; Bessie Tartt Wilson Children's Foundation, supporting children & families through early childhood; Hearth Outreach Program, fostering high quality of life among older adults; Hull Lifesaving Museum – Marine Apprenticeship Program, creating pathways for productive employment for older youth; More Than Words, teaching young adults hands-on business skills; and Raw Art Works, empowering disadvantaged youth through the arts.

“It’s a great opportunity for all involved,” said Lauren Louison, Senior Vice President at SM& who is leading the communications workshop for the Innovators. “SM& gets to work one-on-one with these fascinating, young organizations while they learn the necessary skills for meaningful communications to help them reach key stakeholders in these challenging times.”

Past social innovators SM& counseled have included: CitySprouts, Cradles to Crayons, LEAP Self-Defense, ReVision Urban Farm, True Colors Out Youth Theater, United Teen Equality Center, and Strong Women, Strong Girls.
